War Birds: Western Women Talk About Their WWII-Era Aviation Books and the Stories that Inspired Them
Anne Gafiuk, Elinor Florence, and I will each read and speak, then take questions from the audience before signing books and speaking with students, faculty and staff, and community members one-on-one. This event will appeal to people from across a variety of disciplines at Red Deer College, including History, Political Science, English, Communications, Education, and the Trades. The event will also appeal to anyone in the Red Deer community who is interested in writing, storytelling, and the history of aviation and the Second World War.

Then, on Saturday, November 8 from 12-4pm, the War Birds (as we’ve dubbed ourselves) will be at Red Deer Chapters. Come stock up on personalized holiday gifts and chat history, writing, and publishing!
Elinor Florence grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan and worked as a newspaper journalist for the next thirty years, including nine years at the Red Deer Advocate. She later became a regular writer for Reader’s Digest.
Her first wartime novel called Bird’s Eye View, about a young Canadian woman who joins the air force and becomes an interpreter of aerial photographs, will be published by Dundurn Press in October 2014.

Anne Gafiuk has loved to write for as long as she can remember. She was an elementary school teacher for almost fifteen years, then started freelancing part-time while a full-time mom. She has become very interested in vintage aircraft, the people involved with them and their history, through her book Wings Over High River. She is now working on a wartime scrapbook project from the Okotoks area as well as a WWII RCAF accident proneness report. She also helps people write their own stories through her business What’s In A Story?
